Nov. 28th, 2019

A wonderful Thanksgiving, of which I'm posting briefly, while my sons and their dad duke it out in the last round of a poker game that went on for some time while the other players folded one by one and went to bed. The Lovely Friend folded on the last round, but is still at the table observing. Earlier today, the morning sun blasted through the windows, which face east (obviously--we're at a beach house on the Atlantic coast). It was a beautiful day. I could hardly drag myself out of bed because I was so creaky and groggy. I'd been awake in the night with a lot of pain after a VERY busy and active day yesterday. (Shopping and meals involve 13 people, so it's large scale.) However, I had tea and Advil and slowly returned to consciousness while watching everyone revolve in their orbits.

Successive waves of workers pass through the kitchen, producing coffee, waffles, oatmeal--then there's breakfast cleanup and then people start cooking for dinner. Last night I made two batches of sweet potato rolls. As the day progressed, the Nipper made a mighty mountain of mashed potatoes, the Diva made creamed corn casserole and roasted brussels sprouts with carrots, and corn bread stuffing. The Philosopher put the ham in the oven. Kansas was back at their house roasting a turkey, and when he brought it over, I made the gravy. The Philosopher and his Lovely Friend set up the island with plates, glasses, and silverware, plus pickles and olives. The Diva also mixed up a green salad. And then we ate and it was delicious. For dessert, Angelbaby baked a white buche de noel roll, filled with coffee buttercream with a layer of chocolate ganache, and frosted to look like a birch log. And Kansas made the most AMAZING cheesecake ever. I don't even like cheesecake usually, but this one was rich pumpkin with an Oreo crust, drizzled with dulce de leche that the Diva made by boiling a can of evaporated milk in a big pot of water for three hours. As one does. Everyone said it was the best Thanksgiving dinner ever, but they always say that!

There was also room for sitting on the beach with the Diva, card games and laughter, drinking wine and chatting, working on a puzzle with Tron and the Diva, and a walk down the beach with Muffinhead, Raptor, the Redhead and the Diva after dark, as the tide came in and the young crescent moon dangled the Evening Star just beneath it like celestial jewelry. I watched Raptor play Smash Brothers and engaged in face-making and noise-making contests with him, while the grownups were engaged in discussion of the causes of WWI--an evergreen topic--and I heard the Lumberjack offering to send the Redhead a little pamphlet written by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin that he found quite enlightening. The Redhead painted miniatures while watching the dog show on TV. Perhaps the sweetest moment was when the Diva and Tron and I were all sitting on the couch with Raptor, wrapped up in the same blanket, while he read to us from "Frog and Toad Are Friends"--an old book that has the name of both his dad and his uncle written in it. It was the kind of day you don't want to end--but it must, so the new day can rise up out of the eastern ocean and bring new adventures.
