The Sparrowhawk hasn't been quite at the top of his form lately. Tired, or something. He slept late this morning, and I did my best not to wake him up. Then we spent the rest of the morning mostly just hanging out. We put some more pieces into the jigsaw puzzle, and I cut up two pints of strawberries. It was raining all night and most of the day, so I excused myself from yard work again. He was going to cook dinner, but I thought I'd better do it so he could continue to take it easy. I made chicken with onions and mushrooms in sour cream with dill, mashed potatoes, green beans, and salad. It was cooked and eaten while watching Ellen Kushner's Stroll with the Stars episode. I'd never viewed one of these events before. They're usually a sort of mobile kaffeeklatsch where people get to ask questions. I had hoped she would walk around the property in the desert where she and Delia are staying, because she has posted pictures, and they're pretty spectacular. But apparently their hosts asked her not to, because it's their personal home, and they don't want it online--sensible of them. So it was just a desk view. But it's always interesting to hear about how other writers do things, and Ellen is an entertaining speaker.

After dinner, the sky cleared up a bit, and I forced myself to go out for a walk. It was very refreshing, though damp. I heard the spring peepers in the pond for the first time! So it was worth the effort. Then we watched an episode of "Almost Paradise" followed by another episode of "Mansfield Park." What an interesting contrast! In the first, differences are settled by blows from a blunt object. In the second, words and glances are deployed. I'm pretty sure there is one commonality, though--drugs. If Lady Bertram is not perpetually high, I don't know how she manages to be so languid and oblivious. We crack up every time she speaks. I wish I could import Alex Walker into the world of Mansfield Park to punch that smooth-talking devil Henry Crawford in the face. No nonsense about duels--just WHACK/THUD. If I were slightly more demented, I could do the "Almost Paradise"/"Mansfield Park" crossover AU. Somebody needs to write a fanfic in which Fanny Price gets a life, that's for sure. The Sparrowhawk continues his reading of "From Dawn to Decadence" by Jacques Barzun, from which he reads me amusing bits. I think "From Dawn to Decadence with a Chainsaw" would have made this very thick and dense book sell better.
