May Day

May. 1st, 2020 10:58 pm
Wednesday night, I had one of those middle of the night waking episodes. That actually hasn't happened for awhile. Various anxieties caught up with me, and conspired with my achey joints. I had to get up and read and noodle around for a couple of hours. So I slept late and was still tired. I was fed up with moping and determined to quit trying to think my way out of my problems and just be cheery and useful in some way. The irritating thing is that once I get up late, I can't get very much done no matter what my intentions, but I gave it a shot. I made oatmeal, and finally put away the rest of the groceries, which had been sitting in bags in the hall so their virus particles, if any, could all die. It's more work than it seems, because I had to wash everything that had an impervious surface in soapy water, and rinse and dry it, and move some things to the refrigerator and some to the freezer and some to the basement shelves. And throw out the bags, and wash my hands six or eight times. I talked to my friend in Kansas, who is afraid she has coronavirus. She was coughing and didn't sound good at all. I hope it's just a spring cold.

You'd think that I wouldn't be able to avoid sleeping, after a few nights of this. However, last night I didn't do well because I had another bad dream. It involved trying to steal his tools from a torturer. So it was Day 2 of Eff This, I'm Happy Anyway, Grr! Actually it was a lovely May Day, sunny and clear blue skies after a series of grey and damp days. I went out first thing and washed my face in the dew. This is supposed to make you beeyootiful! I wasn't quite bold enough to roll naked in it. I have too many neighbors. I cleaned up the kitchen, changed the sheets and washed the old ones, as well as the towels and kitchen things, and put away the Sparrowhawk's laundry. We went out for a walk together. In the middle of the path, there were two toads copulating--a rare sight. I decided to call it a good luck omen! It sounds like one of those things you'd find in a scholarly book on folklore. It must have been Toad Liberation Day, because they were on parade everywhere. We must have seen at least a dozen, and had to be careful not to step on them.

I made dinner--fish, mashed potatoes, broccoli, salad--and baked the brownies because we were out of oatmeal cookies. We made great progress on the Eternal Puzzle of Heaven and Hell. When we were sitting on the porch, the shadow of a hawk swooped in swift circles around our yard. I think it was going counterclockwise. I don't know what it means when a hawk goes widdershins around your house on May Day! Nothing bad, I trust--for the next year has just GOT to be better!
