Today was the birthday of the Sparrowhawk's father, who would have been 106 if he were still on this earth. I always like to make a cake on my father's birthday, so I thought it would be nice to make one for Chuck too. It was only a mix, because I had one on the shelf and wanted to use it up, but I made the frosting myself and put a layer of whipped cream cheese and raspberry jam in the middle to give it an extra flavor. I remember when Chuck came to visit us when we lived in Kansas. We took him to the circus with the kids, and he loved it. I made chili because I knew it was his favorite. When he took a bite, he looked very serious and said, "There's just one thing wrong with this chili." I thought, "Oh no--I didn't make it to his taste!" Then he grinned and said, "It's too darn good!" He was a kind man. He had also been a talented athlete, playing football and baseball in high school and college. He once ran a race with Jesse Owens. He lost, of course!

I had a suboptimal night. It was 80 degrees upstairs, and that's not good for sleeping. It rained, but didn't cool down as advertised. It stayed hot and humid. We had one band of rain and wind after another. Trees came down east of here, and power lines fell down and closed 196 for awhile, but nothing much happened in our neighborhood. Except that I forgot to put away our fine new umbrella, and it flew right over the neighbor's fence. It's in the shed drying out, and then I hope we can fix it. If it's broken, I'm going to cry. My lettuce is about to bolt. In one of the lulls, I gave it a haircut and picked off some more leaves. We've had two nice salads and we'll have at least one more. I also harvested some of what we used to call "sour clover" as kids. We used to eat it for fun and wrinkled our faces up at the sour, lemony taste. It's really a form of oxalis, but it's quite edible and will be fine in salad. Since I was out anyway, I also pulled up some more weeds. After that, it started thundering again, and I was done with being outside. Now, with another band of thunder and wind, the cool front has arrived. I opened all the windows to let in the air, and I hope I'll sleep better tonight.
