The last few days were a whirlwind of activity and not much sleep, and I was up late talking to people, so I never got around to blogging. I wanted to write down all the fun things we did so I won't forget, but the first couple of days after people go home, I usually find memories a little overwhelming, because I'm sad and miss them. The kids went downstate to the lake house where the Redhead's parents were staying on Sunday morning, and home the next day from there. Sunday I was SO TIRED. I took a nap and that was about it. Last night we got a decent amount of sleep, and today I did some cleaning up and watered my plants. It's very hot and dry out. The nice thing is that we won't have to cook for days and days! We have leftovers.

We also have lots of happy memories. We hooked up the Nipper's computer to our TV and streamed "Hamilton" from his Disney account. We had a double feature of "Hamilton" plus "1776," which the Sparrowhawk has been watching every 4th since time immemorial. The Philosopher and his Lovely Friend came over and social distanced with us on two nights, and I got to feed them picnic dinners outdoors. The Lovely Friend helped Raptor catch a firefly and put it in a jar to look at for a few minutes until he let it go. They brought us some croissants and scones from the bakery down the street from their hotel, and we all enjoyed them for breakfast. The Sparrowhawk learned to play Super Mario Party with Raptor, and got pretty good at it and won a gem! I loved listening to the Nipper read Pogo to Raptor, doing all the voices with hilarious, awful Southern accents. I laughed so much. We set off some little fireworks that were just exciting enough for Raptor but not enough to terrorize him--fountains of sparks, and tanks that bombarded each other with sparks and then burst into flames, blacksnakes and sparklers. It was a great time all around.

The Nipper said our house is like Rivendell. As it says in The Hobbit, "His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Evil things did not come into that valley." I still think of this as a little aspirational and above my pay grade, but it makes me very happy that my son thinks our house is worthy to be compared to the House of Elrond.
