Jul. 9th, 2020

It wasn't the day I expected. Shortly before nine, we were getting ready to drive to the Duchess's place to visit in her yard with Queenie. I got first a text and then a call from Queenie, to say that the Duchess had just texted her that Dr. Nurse and her husband were at her house and she was very stressed out by the idea of us coming too. Queenie felt that the Duchess didn't want us to visit, and had already decided not to go after all. While I was still trying to wrap my head around this, I also got a text from the Duchess, saying that the situation was causing her a great deal of stress. Clearly some kind of meltdown was going on, but not one that will ever be explained to me. I sent a soothing and agreeable reply to the effect that perhaps if it was so stressful, it might be best if we put off our visit to some other time. She accepted within seconds, so I guess that was the right answer. It's the usual family stuff going on, about which it is probably best not to go into detail. Not a fun way to start the day. But Queenie and I had a great visit yesterday, so we just have to shrug it off and think about that.

Once I got over the momentary disturbance, I was quite happy to have a nice uninterrupted day to pursue some of the things I'd been putting off due to having visitors. I spent a peaceful hour or so weeding and pulling up the ubiquitous redbud seedlings and mint. I had almost filled a compost bag with them when the sweat pouring down my face notified me that it was time to go in and have some ice water. It was fearfully hot and I was just as well pleased not to be sitting in the Duchess's yard sweating. I got started on a dusting and cleanup project upstairs and then took a break for tea with the Sparrowhawk, when the sky grew dark, thunder rumbled, sheets of rain fell, and the power went out. A good time not to be on the road driving home, for sure. We took a nap, and were enjoying a light supper of sandwiches, raw veggies, and chips when the power came back on. We really needed that rain. Sometimes one of the best things about making plans is cancelling them. Or having them cancelled for you . . . . I hope the Duchess had a nice day too.
