WaspSting of Simmer
Jul. 10th, 2020 09:28 pmI've been feeling cranky and uncomfortable all day, probably because of not sleeping well. After days of 90+ weather, the upstairs just warms to a point where it's too hot and stuffy even with the fan on. Also my stomach was hurting again. However, this morning I finally got to do something I'd been wanting to do all week--go to the garden store and take advantage of their end of the season sale. I bought two roses, two daylilies, and an assortment of native and pollinator-friendly plants like coneflower and cranesbill. And a pot of phlox. Also another basil plant, and two very scraggly looking, pot-bound tomatoes that are really a gamble. We'll see if I can nurse them into bearing fruit. At half price, it seemed worth the chance. It was sweltering hot in the greenhouse. I parked the plants in the back yard and went inside to cool off. I did some laundry and put away some laundry and a few other things. The Sparrowhawk made us a delicious stir-fry. It's the first time we've cooked since the kids went home. In the afternoon, the thunderstorms came back and it rained hard again, so the plants got well watered. Maybe tomorrow I can plant them. I try to do something every year to make the place more beautiful. Sometimes my contributions just die off--exactly like in the rest of life. But I figure if even half of them survive, it's worth the effort. Last year, Tron helped me plant two astilbe plants and two ferns in a shady spot we weeded. I was afraid they had died at the end of the summer, but this spring, they came back in fine shape. About half my hellebores have survived. So that's something.
