Aug. 10th, 2020 09:19 pmThe Sparrowhawk came up with the best advice for how to see the Perseids: "Move out of Michigan," he said. Ha ha. So true. Last night it was overcast after dark. Tonight, we've been having an actual derecho that swept through Iowa, flattening the corn, and moved on through Chicago and Wisconsin and across the lake to us. It looked like a jovial lizard-like alien coming to gobble us up,This on the color-coded weather radar. It actually didn't do any harm, at least not here. There was a strangely-colored evening sky, growls of thunder, premature darkness, wind gusts, and pelting rain. But then it went away. I'm glad for a nice drenching rain, because now I won't have to drag the hose around for a couple of days.
This business of getting four hours of sleep a night is getting quite pesky. I couldn't sleep late this morning, because I had an appointment to get my hair cut. We were nearly out of milk and coffee cream, and it came to my attention that there was a giant grocery store in the same strip mall as the salon. I had a mask on already, so I ventured over there. I had to walk through the entire length of the store, because the dairy was at the far end, but there was hardly anyone there. I was tempted to linger and look at all manner of fancy things, but I just got my milk and cream and got out of there. I enjoyed driving home with a Schubert piano concerto on the Sirius Radio in the car--No. 21, B-flat major, D. 960 if I recall correctly. It was so delightful, cool and flowing, like driving alongside a brook with waterfalls and unexpected eddies.
I made that leek and potato soup, and turned the leftover chicken bits into chicken salad. This time I made the celery, pickle, and mustard kind, instead of the fruit and nut kind. However, we didn't eat it yet because the Sparrowhawk got his pizza. I had soup and then tried a piece of pizza. The internal jury is still out on whether I'll get away with that.
