Stamen of Flourish
Aug. 13th, 2020 08:50 pmTuesday night was supposed to be the peak of the Perseids, and the sky was supposed to be clear. We took a blanket and some pillows out in the back yard and lay in the grass watching the sky. It was very pleasant to lie in the dark in the cool of the evening, hearing the chorus of cicadas. However, the sky in the northeast was hazy. The Sparrowhawk's starwatching app showed all kinds of sparkles in the sky, but down where we were, it got more and more cloudy until even Vega wasn't very bright any more. We finally gave up and went inside. We did see just one shooting star though, and it was a bright one!
Last night, we thought of going out again, but we took a look at the sky and realized that if anything, it was cloudier than the night before. We'll try again the next time we swing around the sun. Today I got up a little late, and was just girding myself up to go to the grocery store. I had waited until today, because they were going to give out gas coupons, and Thursday is the alternate Old People's Hours day. But before I could leave, I got a phone call from a friend about another mutual friend and medical matters that were confidential, but fairly complicated. It was great to talk to them, but alas, these problems mean that they have been exposed to way too many people, and we can't visit with them as we had been hoping. And THEN I went to the grocery store. It took longer than usual, because by then there were more people and more lines. I find myself spending more money than I used to. I'm not sure if that's because food prices have gone up in general, or because I buy more things. I see that there are bags of the good rice on the the rice shelf, and I think "But I still have half a bag of rice." But then I think, "But when I run out and I need some, they might not have it any more." So I buy the rice. Same with buying two jars of the good peanut butter, because it's there. And two bottles of oyster sauce, because for months there was none at all. Same with the peanut satay sauce that the Sparrowhawk likes. And so it all adds up. But the good news is that we have tons of food, and if the shelves should become bare again, we're good to go for quite some time. Sigh.
