No attempt at virtuous activity comes without unintended consequences. I woke up too early and couldn't go back to sleep. But I was determined to get stuff done, so I washed the towels and put out clean ones, cleaned the sink and toilet, put away some more odds and ends, watered my plants, and went out for a walk. The nuns were having some kind of outdoor concert, and I heard the strains of a live brass ensemble as I walked past. It was a beautiful, mild late summer day. The sun was still veiled by smoke in the upper air, and there was a strong breeze, probably bringing the promised cold front in. I wanted to make sure to enjoy the day outdoors while I could. But it was just so hard to keep walking. I don't know what the problem is. My legs were tired and they hurt. I keep thinking if I just keep pushing it they'll surely get better! When I'd finished the walk, I was soooo tired and sleepy. We sat outside and had a cup of tea, and I had trouble not falling asleep. If we had a hammock, I think I'd be napping there yet. Or at least until the sun vanished and the cold air sent me scurrying for the house and a warm blanket.

I confess that the reason I couldn't go back to sleep was that I had flashbacks of being mad at the Sparrowhawk's former bosses. It angried up my blood, as Satchel Paige would say. Well, I won't make that mistake again. I'll take Mr. Paige's advice: "If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts."
