Moorhen of Leave
Sep. 17th, 2020 09:27 pmI needed to make a grocery run today, so I didn't have time to go for a walk. I almost did . . . but the Sparrowhawk wanted to show me the latest financial analysis, and after that, I would have had to rush, so I didn't. We're still ahead for the year, but our food budget has gone up quite a bit, even though we don't eat out any more and very seldom get takeout. Part of that is entertainment costs for guests, but I wonder if food prices have gone up. News reports say they have.
I haven't kept as tight a rein on the food shopping as I might have, either. It's one of the few things we can enjoy, so I've been somewhat indulgent. Like buying a pound of walleye for tomorrow. I could have got perch for half the price, but hey . . . walleye! It's not available every day, and it was two dollars off. Meanwhile for tonight . . . here's what I do when I'm going to go off and do something else for a couple of hours, but I want a hot dinner when I come back. I got a pork loin that was on sale. I put chopped onion, carrot, celery, cabbage, and apple in the big cast iron pan and sauteed it with fresh sage and thyme, and then put in the pork loin and a bunch of potatoes cut in quarters, and added the remains of a bottle of Stubbs' barbecue sauce and what was left of a jar of Esch Road cherry salsa, put the lid on and popped it in the oven at 350. We had a nice nap, and when we got up, boiled a couple of ears of sweet corn as an accompaniment, and voila. It was very good and will last for another meal or two. Esch Road is one of our favorite places to swim up by Sleeping Bear. We didn't get that far north on our last trip. It's also a food company.
