Goshawks of Leave
Sep. 24th, 2020 09:49 pmI needed to go shopping again because it turns out that one of the guests we are hosting (outside, on the screen porch, gingerly) this weekend is on a strict keto diet, so my previous menu plan doesn't work. I'm going to make a Venn diagram called "The Dinner Party" with a list of all my friends and their food preferences. It will include the following:
The gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free vegan
Her wife, who likes good plain cooking with lots of meat and very few vegetables, and is allergic to fish and hates mushrooms and needs foods that are not too hard to chew, because she has swallowing problems
The total vegan on the Esselstyn diet which means no fat whatsoever
The friend on the keto diet which means fat, fat, and ALL the fat, but no carbs
Her husband, who likes homemade bread and butter, and plenty of wine
The friend on the paleo diet, who might overlap a tiny bit with some of the others
The friend on the regular ordinary vegan diet, who sometimes cheats with a nice cheese
The very large vegetarian who needs all the vegetables, beans, and grains, and plenty of them
There will be a cluster of Venn bubbles, with perhaps a few tiny crescents of overlap, but mostly a large empty space in the middle, where I will sit, gripping my knife and fork and growling. Fortunately, although they jostle each other in my head, they're not all coming to dinner at once! It's just hard to switch my thinking from one track to the next.
I get a lot of comfort from watching the bees in the daisies. I know this interlude will end soon--two more days of warm weather, and then the chill again. Today, the chipmunk came out as soon as we arrived, looking for his treat. He's a fast learner. He sat and looked at us meaningfully until we put some nuts out for him. Dakota the dog barked at me a little, but soon decided I was boring after all and went about her business.
