The furnace man, from the company with a Dutch name so unpronounceable that they make a joke of it in their own ads, came to check on our furnace this morning. He determined that the funny noise it had been making was the motor that expels any water that drips down the chimney. It was just doing its job. However, a similar noise is made by a bearing that's wearing out, so he checked on that just to make sure, and there is no such problem. He also fixed a sticky valve in the humidifier, and installed a super duper state of the art new HEPA filter that he promised would be much more effective. It had better be, because it was not cheap. Overall, a worthwhile visit, because it should improve the quality of our indoor air this winter. Last but not least, he found a potential short in the connection to the thermostat, and fixed that, so our furnace won't quit unexpectedly in the midst of a polar vortex.

While the Sparrowhawk was shepherding this process, I was upstairs putting away laundry and pulling books off my shelves to be boxed and given away. There were some books about how to do or fix this, that, and the other thing, but I had to admit that either I'd lost interest in fixing it, had lost confidence in the author's methods, or simply couldn't believe I'd ever really do those exercises or fill out all those lists and programs. There were also some books I had genuinely enjoyed at one time, but whose attractions now seemed a bit faded. I was afraid I'd miss them and want them back someday, and then I'd be sad. But I told myself it was better to let them go to someone who would really enjoy them. There was quite a stack in the end. I hung up the Advent calendars, too.

The day was chilly, but delightfully sunny, so we went for a quick walk after the furnace was fixed. We've eaten up one box of turkey leftovers, in sandwiches and dinners. But there's still another box of mostly dark meat that was still on the bones. I deboned it and made some more broth, and chopped some of it up for the Sparrowhawk to use in making another delicious stir fry. Five days of turkey dinner have been wonderful, but it was nice to have some different flavors tonight.
