PierceSleet of Ember
Dec. 10th, 2020 10:43 pm"PierceSleet" may be the day name, but far from it! What an unexpectedly nice day. Not a lot of scheduled tasks taking place, but hey, as I reminded myself just the other day, "For a good life, you just might have to weaken." We had a surprisingly warm day--50 degrees! In December!! This just doesn't happen in Michigan. And the sky was blue. And yet, I really needed to call Queenie. So I did that right away and skipped taking a shower. We had a good conversation. Both of us are thinking about our parents every day. Christmas was so quintessentially their season. I told her about my moment a couple of days ago, when I was playing an old LP of German Christmas music--something by Michael Praetorius on the theme of "Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen"--and chopping potatoes and onions for soup. I felt kind of . . . classic. It was as if generations of my forebears had stood in this moment, and it was now my turn to be there. Although I wasn't wearing a dirndl or anything classic. I had on my usual pair of jeans, secured with a medieval ring belt I bought online, and an old and frayed Stargate t-shirt. I come from a long line of barefoot peasants who are fierce with a chopping knife. Anyway, it cheered us both up to talk.
Then the Sparrowhawk and I both put on our outside pants and went for a walk. I'd been wanting to visit the small-l lake in the Village for awhile, and decided today was the day. It was now or never. It was very pretty and mild over there. So weird! Normally, the lake is iced over by now! The water was still lapping merrily against the shore. By the boardwalk through the marsh, there was a thin skin of ice over the water, but I bet it melted again by late afternoon. I could have stayed there all day. But while we were there, the Sparrowhawk got a mysterious phone call, and when we arrived home, there was a mysterious package on the front porch. It turned out to be a beautiful bouquet, in anticipation of the 14th, which is one of our anniversaries. It was so nice to come in from the walk, light some candles, put on some music, park myself where I could admire the afternoon sun streaming through my lovely flowers, and work on the outline for my story.
I offered to make the Sparrowhawk a hamburger in honor of the occasion, that being the first thing I cooked for him when I lured him over to my parents' house. But he said he didn't want me to do any more work, so he went out and got us some cheesburgers. I finally got my shower and put on a nice shirt so I'd look good from the belt up for an evening Zoom with a couple of people. And that was pretty much our day--a good one.
As The Tragically Hip say,
Let's swear that we will
Get with the times
In a current health to stay
Let's get friendship right
Get life day-to-day
. . . .
For a good life we just might have to weaken
And find somewhere to go
Go somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to grow
Grow somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to go
Let's go somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to grow
We grow where we are needed
