I'm watching "Don't Look Up" and it's killing me. I'm dying here. I think the ghost of Fred Pohl is laughing, but not in a happy way. More in an "I told you about this, but did you listen?" kind of way. Of course, it's only half over. It could still jump the shark. (Laughs hysterically) Yes, in a movie about how WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE, I suppose things could get worse . . . .

Well, on the bright side, the Sparrowhawk is taking a slight turn for the better, in my opinion. He wasn't sure about that earlier, but now he's beginning to think so, too. His throat is a little less painful, and his Kleenex consumption per hour has gone down. Oh, EXCUSE ME, his consumption of disposable tissues has gone down. I mustn't use a trademarked name without acknowledging the trademark, even in private conversation. It's like taking the name of the Lord in vain. Advertising is God.

This movie is making me angry now, because it's so self-referential. There's really no way to use these tropes without exploiting the very thing you pose as mocking. I'm still hoping there will be some core of integrity to it, but I'm afraid it's going to be self-indulgent cynicism all the way down. I'm open to correction, but I don't think this is helping. Moreover, I think all these people would have been quietly dead a long time ago if things were really like this.

Edited to add a very important observation: Listening to Leonardo diCaprio trying to sound as if he's from Lansing, Michigan, is the single most bizarre thing about this movie.
