Sep. 4th, 2022 08:38 pmStill feeling inexplicably blah. I am indolent and easily irritated, the way I am when sick, but there's nothing obviously wrong with me, other than that. Yesterday, I went out and picked a few random vegetables before the tricky creatures got them: an eggplant, a giant cucumber that I stepped on before I saw it, three tomatoes, a nice pile of green beans, and some basil. This garden is really a joke, but someone is profiting by it. There was another cucumber that had been thoroughly nibbled. The cherry tomatoes that everyone told me I should plant, for they would surely bear abundantly, have yielded nothing to ME, but something is picking them as soon as they're ripe. I think they are just too convenient! I have not yet mustered the wherewithal to cook the eggplant. We've been slowly making our way through a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store, accompanied by green beans, cucumbers, and the most succulent tomatoes imaginable--not from my garden, but courtesy of my sister in law, who sent a bag over with the Sparrowhawk's brother last time he came.
Today we went for a pleasant walk by the marsh at the botanical gardens. It was a gloomy day, the kind that doesn't inspire one to go outside, but it's always much nicer than expected once you get out into it. The air was humid but cool. Goldenrod is blooming abundantly, accompanied by yellow and purple vetch, and a few late stalks of Queen Anne's Lace and chicory. The milkweed pods are ripening, but still green. There are purple clusters on the wild grape vines. They are sour and foxy, but I like them just as much as when I was a child. There's a thin lining of sweetness next to the skins.
I forgot to mention that I had a dream recently in which I was staying at a luxury hotel with a fantaaastic pool. Also in this dream, I was wearing pair of old school jeans made of good all-cotton denim. They fit me with a nice loose cut, and they had real old-timey BIG POCKETS, the kind you can actually put something in. This is the kind of dream that should be widely disseminated.
