Last night after going for a walk, my knee swelled up unexpectedly and felt very stiff. I iced it for about half an hour, and that did it a lot of good. Like magic! It started raining in the night, and rained pretty much all day. In the morning when I went to get Madame, it was only 38. I waited in the driveway for a few minutes, and then the garage door opened, but no one came out. Finally, I went and knocked on the door. I heard voices inside, but guessed it was the TV, which turned out to be the case when Madame called to me to come in. She was trying to wrangle her cane AND her walker, and her big new purse, into which she was stuffing her entire charging case for the cochlear implant. She must have had some vague memory of the time I helped her charge the battery in the car. I helped her climb in with the whole megillah. It's a bit awkward, because I have to make sure she gets in the car without falling, while not letting the walker roll away before I can stuff it into the back of the car. However, this is not my first rodeo.

It was a very gloomy day, a good day to go somewhere cheerful and have coffee. The bookstore is already bedecked with Christmas items and is very bright and sparkly. I thought Madame would want to talk about her impending move, but it seemed that was mostly what she did NOT want to talk about. I can tell she's quite anxious about it. She said Mademoiselle has tagged the items she wants the movers to take to the new place. "I will have to take off some of those tags," Madame said maliciously. She is a mischief maker. Her idea is to take the bare minimum, because she doesn't want to admit she will be living there. Mademoiselle naturally wants to make the place as homelike as possible, in the hope that Madame will settle in, which she has no intention of doing.

We got home a little earlier than usual. Madame was getting chilled from sitting by the window, so I suggested we could walk around and look at things, and then sit in a warmer spot. I turned my back for a moment to pick up a copy of Emma by Jane Austen--and the next thing you know, Madame had vanished. I looked around for her, but couldn't see her. We had already established that her phone was dead. I thought she was probably in the bathroom, so I headed that way. I found one of the kitchen staff trying to talk to someone through a crack in the door. The irony is that this staff member is also deaf! I told her that the person inside was my friend. Madame was blocking the door with her walker, as she tried to pick up everything that had fallen out of her purse onto the floor. I extricated her from this predicament, and she said "Well, are you ready to go?" I took that as a mandate, and dropped my copy of Emma back at the front desk to avoid going through checkout. I'll have to try again later. So tantalizing!!

In the parking lot, I was trying to get Madame back into the car, when Mademoiselle unexpectedly appeared. She had been trying contact her mom to let her know that the car had been towed away. She asked if Madame wanted to go home in her car, but poor Madame was so confused by too many options and so cold that she literally started shaking, so I quickly got her in the car and turned up the heat. We met Mademoiselle at home and all was well for now. I am hoping that the move goes smoothly tomorrow! I've arranged to visit her on Sunday afternoon and see her new digs.
