RedRooster of Zenith
Jun. 7th, 2024 10:17 pmI'm loving our odd weather. This is the second day of blustery and cool wind, bringing a kaleidoscopic, ever-changing swirl of raggedy clouds, and ruffling up the leaves so their silvery undersides flash in a passing gleam of sun. The waves are big on the lake, where I, alas, am not present to see them. But then I'd be tempted to go swimming when the red flags are up, which would be very naughty of me.
I had to make an auxiliary trip to the store to get things that are on sale and get my gas coupon. There are only a couple of days a week to get the coupon, and they're always changing them. In the store, I encountered a woman who was not only older than me, but shorter, and she asked if I would get a box of baking soda off the high shelf for her. She asked for the house brand, and we agreed that there's not much you can do to ruin baking soda. Every time I took a step away, she made a remark, and so we ended up having quite a conversation by the time I got to the end of the aisle. She says Walmart is much cheaper, but she needed to make herself some cookies TODAY, and Walmart is too far away. And also at Walmart, sometimes there's no one around to help you reach things. Or talk to, I imagine.
I especially wanted to get some steak that was on sale. But, as often happens, there was none on the shelf. I dared to go ask the guy at the meat counter if he had any. He very kindly said if I would wait a minute, he would cut some up for me. Yay! On my way out of the store, I paused because a woman was about to pull out of her parking spot. She had to stop for a car that whizzed past. And then again for a kid on a scooter. And then for two more little boys on bicycles. One of them crashed on the pavement right at my feet. I helped him disentangle himself from his fallen machine, and asked him if he was all right. "No! Ow!" he said, rubbing his contusions. But then he got his bearings and said "I mean yes, thank you," and buzzed off to rejoin his companions.
And those were the exciting events of my day. The Sparrowhawk went to his book club and brought home a handful of cookies.
