Visiting Madame has become increasingly difficult for me, because it is more and more unpredictable, and as a J-type person, I don't like uncertainty. I like to know what to expect. That is not a reasonable requirement when it comes to older people with dementia. However, I feel victorious today. I arrived in some trepidation. Last week, she was not in a mood to go out, so we visited at her residence. This week, she was all set to go, so I just took her to the cafe as usual. The rental car has one virtue, in that it is lower to the ground, and thus easier for her to climb in and out. Madame forgot her checkbook, couldn't remember what she likes to eat, and got slightly lost on the way back from the bathroom. Other than that, we had a fine time and she seemed to enjoy the outing very much. It didn't snow overnight, thank goodness, so I got a break from shoveling.

Meanwhile, on the home front, the Sparrowhawk awaited the furnace inspection and the city inspection of the new air conditioner. The whining noise I had noticed when the furnace turned on was an inducer motor that had a bad bearing and needed to be replaced. My sensitivity to odd noises can be beneficial. The motor, as I thought I recalled, had been replaced three years and three days ago--exactly three days more than the warranty! The service guy went ahead and did it for free anyway--but he warned us that this motor is a weakness on our particular furnace model, and next time it won't be under warranty. Good to know. The AC inspector noted a couple of minor details that need to be corrected, but gave it his stamp of approval anyway. He has contacted the service company and they will come over and do the work. So we're all fettled up with our heating and cooling.

I had thawed out some pork chops before we decided to have pizza last night (a decision, btw, that caused my stomach to give me ruthless punishment most of the night). I browned the chops with onions, then rubbed them with salt, pepper, spicy brown mustard and sour cream, and simmered them in half a can of beer that was left over from when some of the Sparrowhawk's friends came over last night. I also made mashed potatoes and green beans. The pork chops came out quite nicely, and I trust they'll treat me more kindly than that perfidious pizza. It was very tasty . . . but that's how they get ya.
