It was a beautiful sunny day, though cold again. The weather report says this is the only nice day we're going to have for awhile. The wind will rise, and there will be precipitation of various kinds. There's still some debate as to what, and how much, but all concur it won't be pretty. Unless you really like freezing rain. I didn't spend as much time outside as I would have liked to. I went out to inspect my properties and admire the hellebores and snowdrops in bloom, and how many daffodils are coming up. I think the ones I planted late in the year are coming up, though I won't be sure until they bloom. The ground is far too squishy and muddy to do anything yet. Unfortunately, as I surveyed my prospects, I noticed a strange dark line on the trunk of a tall pine tree at the back of the yard. "That looks like a crack," said the admonitory little voice in my head. I went closer and examined it, and sure enough, there's a serious crack in the trunk of the tree. That means it's damaged and vulnerable to the high winds we're going to have. I'm going to call the tree service in the morning and see how soon they can come and have a look at it. It may have to be cut down. Oh lordy. The fun never ends. I will just pray that it doesn't fall on anything in the meantime.

I am disappointed in myself because I am still not up to snuff. I woke up too early. I have given advice to a friend who had to choose a 20-minute read-aloud for some third graders; I have done two loads of laundry; I have fed the Sparrowhawk--ham, cheesy broccoli, mashed potatoes--and made him some brownies for when he gets home from his book club. But that's about all. I tried to take a nap, but the neighbor's dog started barking and woke me up. I've had the second alarmed call from CeeSquared in Minnesota in a week! First it was the tornadoes she was worried about, and today, the synagogue attack in West Bloomfield. Fortunately that is on the east side, some distance from us . . . Although we are within a mile of all three synagogues in our area, and used to have some of the Orthodox living on our block, because it was within the limits of how far they could walk to the synagogue on the Sabbath.
