I suppose it's not surprising that we had water in the basement. The weather people pointed out tonight that we've had 300% of our normal precipitation in the last 30 days. That's a lot. EverDry finally responded to our importunings, but in a lukewarm fashion. They will come over and check it out, but not for two weeks. The cleaners returned, declared their work complete, and removed the massive machines. The poor guy was completely out of breath by the time he got the giant dehumidifier upstairs. I'm afraid it's a depressing sight down there now, without the amenities of carpeting. Tomorrow the tree service is coming, and we will have to focus on that. Maybe on Friday we can start thinking about how to make our basement better again.

When I walked into Madame's residence this morning, I found her asleep in a chair by the dining room, in a little row of sleeping elders-three or four of them. I noticed that she didn't have her hearing aid on, so I couldn't speak to her. Instead I touched her arm gently, but it startled her awake. I asked about the hearing aid, and a staff member got it out of the supply closet for me, with the excuse that someone who didn't usually work there had been doing the morning rounds. I still felt that someone who knew Madame should have realized that she was completely unable to hear anything! After that, we motored off to her room and had a nice visit. She greatly enjoyed the Starbucks I brought for her, and she also exclaimed over my outfit, a rose-colored pullover with my Milano millefiori necklace and enamel butterfly earrings. I learned when my mother was living in a retirement community that the residents really enjoy a splash of color, so I always try to wear something bright or fun to look at. I helped her get to the bathroom, which posed a good deal of difficulty. I looked up her husband's obituary, because she couldn't remember when he had passed away. I kept her company while she ate a little of her not very appetizing lunch, and then I went home.

We had freezing rain with surprise slippery spots, and I saw a lot of reports of slide-offs all over the metro area. The Sparrowhawk was contemplating whether he should go to the gym. Much to my relief, he got a text from Coach saying that in view of the number of accidents in the area, she was canceling gym for the night. The Sparrowhawk is doing a workout at home.
