We saw Project Hail Mary yesterday. It was great, and cleverly put together, and had some amazing scenery. I had been hoping it would help me escape the feelings of cosmic vertigo and dread to which I've been prone lately, but alas, no. If anything, it made them worse, because there are so many moments where Ryland Grace, our viewpoint character, experiences just that! For me, it's not physical vertigo, but rather an internal sensation of things spinning out of control, of being not very tightly roped up to a thin edge of the precarious. And Ryland Grace provides many scenes of exactly that. But I still recommend the movie highly. Hopefully you won't have quite the same reaction I did. When I got home, I tried a couple of shots of the paczki-flavored vodka I had in the freezer, to see if that would ameliorate the situation. It had no effect whatsoever, and I dared not increase the dosage lest my stomach spontaneously combust with the firewater.

It's imperative that I use every spare moment to get things ready around here, because we'll return from Chicago on Wednesday, and on Thursday, Tron and the Lumberjack will arrive for their first visit in ages! But I've never been good at using those spare minutes in a practical way. This morning, I put some laundry in, made a weak start at packing, and dashed to the bakery outlet for more bread and a ham and cheese croissant for the Sparrowhawk. He worked at removing some of the carpet furring strips from the edges of the guest room so the Lumberjack won't step on them and hurt his feet. The cement nails that held them down will not come out, so we'll have to tape over them or something, but at least some of the vicious little tacks that were sitting there point up are gone. This evening, we went down there and made sure the tv was working, by watching Jeopardy while I tried to scrape up more of the carpet pad remnants that are stuck to glue swirls on the floor. I didn't have great success, but I made some progress.

What I look forward to all day is climbing into bed and watching another episode of Magnum PI. We've almost finished them, so we'll have to find a replacement. I might try The Rockford Files--I enjoy watching James Garner grumble at his pappy and then get beat up by each week's contingent of sweaty thugs. That man has a durability that is inspiring.
