I saw Madame today. I took her a mocha, and she really liked it. I brought a slice of lemon cake with me, but I didn't offer it to her immediately, because I was afraid it would spoil her appetite for lunch. They brought her lunch to her room, but she made no attempt to even touch it. She said it didn't appeal to her. Well, it didn't really appeal to me either. It was what I think must be the Wednesday usual--meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, and a roll. I kept her company for awhile, hoping she might decide to eat. She seemed to be getting tired and sleepy, so eventually I decided to go home and let her rest. When she starts telling me that it was nice that I came, I know it's her tactful way of saying she's done now! I told the staff on my way out that she hadn't eaten anything yet, and they said they'd keep an eye on her. I had to help her to the bathroom again. I've been surprised by how nonchalant she is about her functions these days. But today was different. She said at one point, "This is really weird, isn't it?" I agreed it was kind of weird, but told her it's just what happens sometimes--you need help for things you used to do by yourself. Another interesting difference was that she expressed concern about several items around the room that she felt were out of place or might fall. This fear about things that seem askew is common to people with dementia, but I haven't seen it with her before. At the same time, she will set her coffee cup most precariously on the edge of a table and never notice that it's about to fall off. All these things come and go.

I made some pizza and salad for the Sparrowhawk, and he has girded himself up and gone to the gym, which is a victory for him!
