ismoI looked up a quote by Muhammad Ali at some point, so now Facebook shows me lots of things about boxing, often featuring surprisingly thoughtful quotes by boxers. The scenery is nice too. Boxers are often portrayed shirtless. My go-to quote is still Mike Tyson: "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."
This has some immediate relevance to my life, as I hit a big pothole of the mind during the last couple of days and fell right in. Then I floundered around for quite awhile, but finally got out. Things that don't help: eating nacho chips out of the bag. Trying to find more information. Reading things people who are not boxers actually say. Ranting. Thinking about the future. Things that did help, eventually: making soup and eating some. Going for a walk. Reading a Nora Roberts fantasy novel ("The Awakening") about a woman who inherits four million dollars and goes to Ireland, where it turns out she's magic AND gets an agent and a book deal. We should all live so long. Listening to the Sparrowhawk read me "Secret Water," by Arthur Ransome--the chapter where Able Seamen Titty and Roger, and Bridget the ship's baby, get stuck on a tidal flat with the tide coming in, and have to burn the wrappings of the cornflakes, biscuits, sugar, and cream buns to make a distress signal. It is a very suspenseful chapter, and I told him he couldn't stop until they got rescued. The Sparrowhawk in general. Also, ordering some little gifts online for people I love. The Sparrowhawk's fox t-shirt that I ordered for Christmas finally arrived! I slept four hours last night, but went back to bed for a nap and felt better, then started writing again and finished off that annoying scene of dialogue.
