Today's big excitement was driving to the bookstore parking lot, where a pretzel truck visits once a month. We got delicious fresh hot soft pretzels, and quickly drove home so we could put spicy brown mustard on them. I was driving, and the Sparrowhawk was holding the bag full of aromatic pretzels. I was exercising great self-control by not demanding a bite. "The Sparrowhawk has self-control," I said to myself. "He's not taking a big bite out of his pretzel right here in the car." Then he opened the bag and said, "Want a bite?" It's good to have a friend who loses their self-control at the same time you do.

Last week, Soap Opera in Madison, one of my favorite places to visit there, sent me an ad. I found some beautiful soap half-price on their website, so I ordered some. It came in the mail today, which is lucky because my last bar of soap is almost gone. Autumn Harvest, Spruce, and Pear. They all smell good. Moving from one small treat to another isn't the worst way to navigate through time when all the big markers are askew.

Almost forgot to say: the Nipper seems to be holding his own. Raptor is a little bundle of energy in spite of his congestion. The Redhead is probably worst off right now. She's having a lot of aches and pains. However, according to the oximeter, they're all full of oxygen just as they should be.

Hooray for oxygen! Also The Soap Opera. I am afraid on cheated on them a little and ordered some bars of soap off Etsy recently (that have not yet arrived).

Me, too. The Etsy soap arrived and now my whole bedroom smells like lingonberry spice. My local current faves are Copa Soaps and The Tin Goat.

Soap Opera shoutout!

Chuck Bauer and Chuck Beckwith created the Soap Opera in 1972.

I was a typesetter working down the street at a quick printer in the 1980s. Chuck Bauer would bring in aromatic legal pads of copy: I designed, typeset and laid out product labels, which the folks upstairs would print on sticky paper and then cut into tiny pieces with a guillotine cutter. If your labels are B&W, then I designed them. I typeset their first mail order catalog back in 1984.

The Chucks led a major change on State Street, by building a charming little shop.
