Well, it's still cold here, but not as cold as it is in some other places. Yesterday I went out and shoveled away 2-3 inches of snow that had gradually accumulated over the weekend. I figured that even if it snowed again, it would be good to start from a clean base. My neighbor with the snow-blower was not out, and neither was anyone else. Even the mail person was not there to appreciate my efforts, since it was a holiday. I was also put out because I had compiled seven nicely decorated notes to various beloved people who had done kind things for me, and it was no use mailing them, because holiday.

Last night it snowed nearly another 6 inches, and when I woke up, all was thickly draped in fresh, sparkly white. I doggedly put on my gear again and went out to clear away so I could drive over to see Madame. The snow was not light and fluffy like the previous lot. It had packed down more, and had that dense, creamy texture like a cake thickly frosted with buttercream. As I was doing my front walk, behold the cavalry in the form of Irish from next door! He cheerily fixed his own driveway and then came over and did mine. Saints bless the man. That saved me about an hour of hard work. Luckily I still had some cookies, so I gave him a bag full. He accepted them graciously, although he said that Daisy is quite the cook, and likes to check out cookbooks from the library. That kid is a dynamo. I learned that Irish grew up in a south Chicago neighborhood, and that his father, although technically retired, still gets up at 3 in the morning and goes to work in the stockyards two or three times a week. "He wouldn't make sense anywhere else," Irish said, "but in his neighborhood, he makes sense." I thought that was a very good description of character. I'll steal it if I ever get a chance. This is the great thing about extroverts--they'll tell you everything about themselves if you just give them time. I skidded over the snow-covered ruts of our side street to the Village, where everything is cleaned up right down to the asphalt--that's what they get for their taxes--and visited Madame. I may not see her for some time, because she's getting her hip replacement at the beginning of March and then will have to recover. I hope she'll be okay.

We had a cozy, low-key Valentine's Day sitting by the fire, listening to romantic music and reading our books. The Sparrowhawk made Cornish game hens with lemon for dinner, and they were great. He got the skin nice and crackly. In the evening, we started watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice. It's been a while since our last Jane Austen binge. Tonight I suggested that since we still have some wood, and since it may well be the coldest night of the year, we might as well have another fire. We had cheeseburgers for Mardi Gras by the fireside, and watched an episode of Jeopardy on the Sparrowhawk's computer. Then we watched the rest of Pride and Prejudice. I feel extremely lucky that I live in a part of the country where we are used to cold and snow, and that our house has thick walls and stays warm. We also have lots of blankets and comforters, wool socks and sweaters, and thermal-lined boots. We are fortunate indeed, as a Jane Austen heroine would say.
