I got a decent night's sleep, even though in the dream world, I was in the Navy, had a commanding officer named Captain Captin, and had to listen to many repetitions of Grand Old Man. I got up and put in my grocery order--maybe the last one, and I hope so, because they claimed not to have cashews, clementines, laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid. It was a beautiful day. We drove over to the small lake and walked. Somewhat to our surprise, there were a lot of people out on the ice, enjoying the last of it. There were half a dozen ice shacks and fishing holes, with people fishing and little kids sliding around. I heard one little boy shout as I walked by, "This is the best day of my life, ever!" Later tonight, the weatherman expressed some concern about all the frolicking, and said that tomorrow, when the temperature is just a few degrees warmer, it won't be safe to be on the ice. Along the boardwalk, where the willow trees dip their branches into the water, the ice was already receding and open water could be seen. The wind, passing over the ice, was pretty cold, but the sun on the ice was brilliant.

My friend Master J sent me the most lovely scarf as a late birthday gift! She wove it herself from sari silk and raffia with gold threads. It's a soft, silky, heavy texture, with reds, greens, golds, and many other colors--all the colors of dawn and summer. Her generosity overwhelms me, as this is a real piece of art that she could have sold for a lot of money. I found it very heartwarming and comforting. She's an inspiration to me, because people often don't value her work as it deserves, but she never lets that stop her. She just goes on making beautiful things.

I tried a new recipe for dinner: pork chops with an orange glaze made with marmalade, accompanied by sweet potatoes and cabbage. We had a bag of frozen peach slices in the freezer, and I didn't want it to go to waste after it was unceremoniously thawed, so I also served a little dessert of greek yogurt sprinkled with brown sugar, with the peaches and juice poured over it.
