It was Pretzel Day at the bookstore, so we went there and bought first books and then yummy soft pretzels. The book I bought was The Lost Spells by Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris. It describes itself as the "little sister" to The Lost Words by the same author and illustrator, which the kids bought me for Christmas once. That was a big, gorgeous book. This is a small, gorgeous book of little poems and incantations for plants, animals, and birds. It's like a little treasure box, something to be cherished.

I tried to do some garden planning, but I'm daunted by the deer. The Diva gave me a gift certificate to a seed catalog that has the most beautiful pictures of heirloom vegetables and flowers. I was so very happy at the thought of choosing some of these beautiful things to grow in my back yard. Now I'm just sad because I'm pretty sure that whatever I try to grow, those damn deer will tear up and devour. It puts a crimp in my style. I'm trying to think of how to protect my plantings, but it takes an awful lot of fence. I'm not sure I can do it.

We had soup and various leftovers for dinner and went for a walk after. We can do that now, because the sun doesn't go down until close to eight o'clock! It was lovely to smell the fresh air. Now that it's warmer, the air actually has scents in it. The red-winged blackbirds are back among the cattails. We saw one neighbor out walking with some visiting family, and another neighbor waved to us from across the street and said, "Happy spring!" I think people are feeling more alive again.
