ImperialPansy of Bloom
May. 26th, 2021 10:00 pmI was glad to have yesterday be over. It was an anniversary, but not in a good way. A couple of people have said to me recently that I should stop thinking about the past and move on. They don't really understand, though. I don't ruminate on the past. It comes and gets me. There's something about the way my mind works that causes dreams and memories to be almost as real as this waking world. It makes it possible for me to create stories the way I do, but sometimes it is painful as well. But it's not really possible for me to leave the past behind in the same way that some people seem able to. For me, the past is still alive, just around the corner, and sometimes I walk into it without meaning to. As Faulkner famously said, "The past is never dead. It's not even past."
Anyway, having it be the 26th instead of the 25th is a relief. A week or so ago, we got a notification from the gym we haven't visited in over a year that they were beginning to re-open, and that we'd have to show up and check in or we would be taken off the rolls and have to sign up again if we wanted to participate. My theory today was that if I got up pretty early, I could make a grocery run and still be back in time to get to the gym early so we could reorient ourselves. However, I did not wake up that early. Last night I woke up a couple of times to hear a steady rain drumming on the roof. There's something so pleasant about hearing the rain all around the comfy and dry little box that I'm in. But I did not wake up early. I gave up on the shopping and we went to the gym.
The class moves along briskly with three cardio intervals interspersed with leg work, upper body exercises, and core work. The treadmills were all taken, so we had to occupy the stationary bikes. I will say indelicately that it really hurts my butt. Ow. The instructor set my seat to the third notch and said "There, that should be right." It wasn't. It bent my knee and hip in a bad way, and made me feel as if I was going to bonk myself in the face with my knee. I had to figure out that I needed to put it up to the fourth notch. I told the Sparrowhawk about this later, and he laughed, because that's the setting he uses. I always forget that our legs are the same length. It's only his longer torso and round German head that make him a couple of inches taller than me. The class was really hard work. If I did that a couple of times a week, I'd be a lot stronger than I am now. I may or may not be able to walk tomorrow . . . .
We were pretty much knackered for the rest of the day. I got him to make some bacon, this being one of the cooking chores at which he is adept. I turned the bacon into toasted BLTs, served with crispy roasted brussels sprouts and sliced carrots, celery, and sweet peppers. Then I cleaned up the kitchen. So I got quite a bit of exercise today. But I'm going to have to work harder in the next couple of days, because we have more visitors coming.

Date: 2021-05-27 06:38 am (UTC)BLTs are absolutely the reason for the season.
i hope you spend some time in a nice hot bath. research says it has many of the same benefits as aerobic exercise, so there you go.
