ismoI woke up a little too early. One of my dreams involved my brother coming to visit, with a small child. I was getting out the child-size silverware we used to have when our kids were little. In reality, those things have long since gone elsewhere. When I woke up, I remembered the children we used to have around here, and how I miss them. It was a nice day, with a breeze, and I managed to get out and do some serious weeding. I dug and chopped up some killer thistles that had grown to a great height, before they could blossom and seed. My reward for walking vigorously yesterday and trying really hard to stretch out and not limp was to have my joints more hurty than usual. No good deed etc. I tired out too soon. But it could also be my lack of enough sleep, plus the AQI was not great today. I think it must still be the smoke in the air, because there's nothing else amiss that I could see.
After I finished weeding, we were sitting out in the back yard--freshly mowed by the Sparrowhawk yesterday--enjoying the antics of the birds chirping and flitting around. The woodpecker was drumming away at the top of the phone pole. And then we saw a hummingbird visiting the garden! So exciting! Mr. and Ms. Science had a resident hummingbird at their place in the UP. They called him King Tiny because of the way he boldly perched on the highest twig of the birch tree. Ours I think must have been Queen Tiny, because of her green plumage with no bright patch at the throat. And . . . WOW. As I was typing this, an unearthly screech sounded through the open window, followed by hooting and trilling. Possibly a barn owl, although this was a more science fictional version of an owl call than I've ever heard. Possibly the aliens are trying to do bird calls to conceal their identities as they stalk us, and not doing a very good job.
