LeafBeetle of Flourish
Aug. 11th, 2021 08:41 pmWell, this is exciting—not. Last night the long-anticipated storm finally crossed Lake Michigan. It didn’t amount to much: big wind, downpour, a few flashes of lightning. Still, with the very first gust of wind, all the lights went out and everything turned off. The power company said maybe they’d fix it by 1:30 pm today. Nope. The new notice says the outage won’t be fixed until 5 pm Friday. If then. Continuing storms might intervene. It’s hot and sticky. We might try sleeping in the basement. We put ice in the cooler so we could have some milk, cold cuts, and packaged salad without opening the refrigerator. We can still light the stove top with a match to make coffee. Listening to Mahler on the battery-powered radio, by candlelight. Hoarding phone charges. I’m cross with the power company because our neighborhood is always one of the first to lose power. I’m worried about losing the contents of the freezer. We already went through this once already this year. Ah well. It’s a good time to read actual books, in the absence of tv and Internet. I’m halfway through Greg Bear’s “The Unfinished Land.”
