Tumbleweed of Leave
Sep. 7th, 2021 09:56 pmThere's a potentially productive space early in the day when something or other usually gets done. Today that was to be dedicated to visiting the Secretary of State's office (sadly, just the glorified DMV run by the secretary of the state of Michigan; it would have been much more interesting to visit the actual Secretary of State and tell them a thing or two). Due to some regulation that completely escapes reason, even though our driver's licenses say "enhanced" on them, they're not enhanced ENOUGH because they don't have a tiny star on them. I don't get it. But we assembled passports, Social Security cards, and a marriage license (to prove my name is legally my name, I guess) and hied ourselves to the office. This would have been a 10-minute trip to the nearest mall, but when making the appointment, the Sparrowhawk accidentally clicked on the wrong location. So we had to drive, instead, for 20+ minutes on the crappy 4-lane commercial thoroughfare jammed with semis and semi-disturbed people, to arrive at an even older and grungier mall in another town. But we got there on time, and no harm done. Who knows--perhaps it was fortuitous and would have taken even longer in our rightful mall.
What makes the DMV tiring, other than the endless lines and waiting, and having to wear a mask, is that it's a cross-section of humanity. That includes people who have been left behind, people whose state evokes sadness and the wish that I could do something to help, as well as the obnoxious jerks who evoke a wish to give them a poke in the (uncovered) snoot. The staff were all remarkably cheerful and kind, though. It turned out I didn't need any of the credentials they specified on the website that I MUST bring with me. They just renewed my license early and will send me the be-starred one in the mail. I had a moment of panic when I realized they were going to give me the vision test, but it was a piece of cake. And so home.
I got back on the editing horse and went through another chapter. Later in the day, there was a thunderstorm and some rain, but I missed most of it because I was napping. I dreamed I saw my sister the Duchess. She was wearing a very beautiful blue dress, though not the one she wore to my wedding. It was a different shade of blue, and much more fashionable, but it brought out her eyes just as the other one had. She sat down next to me and said she would keep me company until we went to whatever thing we were waiting to do in the dream. That was nice. Naps are good.
