This morning's moment of cheer: A fragile hour of morning sunlight. Driving through it in my car, listening to "L'apres-midi d'un faune" on Sirius radio. At the opposite end of the day, I went for a quick walk under a sky gone dark and snowy, saw a brief gleam of sunset light through a crack in the clouds, and froze in 18 degree temperatures. The streets were icy, and the wind brought a stinging spray of snow. I had my phone in my pocket, and it got so cold the battery drained. Brr.

Last night I had bad dreams. This afternoon, the Duchess arrived to pick my mother up for her hematology appointment, and learned that the staff had been very concerned about her in the morning. She didn't show up for breakfast, and when they checked on her, they found her disheveled and agitated, sorting through stacks of papers in her bathrobe. She was trying to find information about her appointment, because she had forgotten what it was for. They actually worried that these appointments were a figment of her imagination, because she seemed so confused. The supervisor guessed that she might have a UTI again, and had a urine sample taken. We should hear from the lab tomorrow. By the time the Duchess arrived to pick her up, she had eaten and was dressed, and carried the rest of the day off as if everything were normal. However, her blood pressure was high, her balance was uncertain, and she has lost more weight, as I suspected. I hope they can quickly diagnose and treat the UTI, if she has one.

When I got home from my walk, the Sparrowhawk had made some curried potato soup. It made the house smell so good, and it tasted as good as it smelled.
