Halloween of Shadow
Oct. 31st, 2021 10:36 pmI avenged myself for not being able to play Harry Potter music by sleeping extremely late and going for a walk. The leaves are falling in earnest and the paths are paved with gold. When we went out, it was a sullen day with rolling grey clouds, but occasional gleams of sun are even more treasured in such a sky, and the object they illuminated look like precious artifacts from the dawn of time. Then all the clouds blew away, and the sky was so blue it seemed as if the color had been freshly invented for the occasion. On the whole, a better use of my time anyway.
When we got home, I took a shower and dug out some garb for a Halloween costume. I dressed as a Musketeer, in a poet shirt, a leather vest I got at a Readercon clothing swap many years ago, black velveteen leggings, a Ren Faire black hat, a white poet shirt, and a pair of rather intimidating boots that I owe to
clevermanka, who pointed them out to me, also long ago. I borrowed the Sparrowhawk's fencing foil to hang on an improvised baldric. Thus equipped, I tried sitting outside on the porch until time for my Zoom with the Nonesuch and Moonmoth, but the clouds came back and it rapidly became too chilly. While I Zoomed, the Sparrowhawk cut the jack-o-lantern all by himself. I thought it was the first time he had done it, but he says not. I think he's right--there have been times when we each did one. Anyway, it was a great one.
At the appointed time, as it was growing dark, we illuminated the pumpkin and lit candles by the windows, turned on the porch light, and awaited revellers. We had some adorable visitors of all ages. I quickly started giving away handfuls of candy, because I could tell there wouldn't be very many. I definitely got too much candy again this year. It's only 44, but windy, so it feels like 39, and it was raining earlier in the day. Probably that explains it. The Sparrowhawk enjoyed my costume, so it was worth dressing up just for that.
