Nov. 18th, 2021 07:40 pmAnother day that did not go as planned. I guess I should turn this into an acronym, for brevity's sake. ADTDNGAP. The Sparrowhawk wanted me to be present at the auto repair, to describe to them my perceptions. The food I ate yesterday did not agree with me. I woke up way too early, in some pain, went back to sleep after a long time, then woke up again and stayed that way. I received the benefit of a very thrilling sunrise through stormy gray clouds, when the sun finally did rise. Other than that, though--MISERY. I was in kind of an altered state of consciousness due to lack of sleep on top of pain and lack of food. I couldn't find succor in reading or anything that would normally be nice. Finally the Sparrowhawk woke up, and we drove off to the auto repair shop. It's not as easy as it sounds these days, because they are on a street that is radically torn up for repairs. We tried a back way, but found ourselves right next to the shop, yet unable to enter because cars were parked all over the driveway. I hopped out, went inside, and asked for advice on how to actually arrive. It involved backing out of the street we were on, going down a block or two, then getting into the single open lane on the torn-up street and wending our way between trucks and orange cones into the other driveway. I'd have to draw you a map . . . .
We had planned to have a nice coffee in the coffee shop across the street while waiting for a diagnosis, but they said it was going to take awhile, so we requested a lift home. The Sparrowhawk cajoled me into going back to bed, in spite of my protestations that my sleep button was broken and I was doomed to eternal wakefulness. If true, that would have been pretty bad, considering what a foul humor I was in by then. I did fall asleep, after some time glaring at the wall and contemplating the decline and fall of everything. I got up again just in time for a pleasant Zoom with the Nonesuch, talking about Barsoom and writing in general--always inspiring. And that was it for the day. I had some chicken soup. Bah, I say--BAH.
The repair shop called and said that we have a bad tie rod and the wheels need realignment, and the rear brake pads need replacing. All good things to know and fix before embarking on a drive to Chicago. So at least I have vindication! I was not imagining things. They think they can just re-secure the splash guard, and it will probably be okay. I do recommend the Sirius XM Holiday Pops channel. They have lovely Christmas music that is not cloyingly repetitive. Even in my current state, it is at least somewhat soothing.
