Lamb'sEar of Ember
Dec. 15th, 2021 10:10 pmEarly this morning, as it was getting light, I was semi-aweke, and heard a great cawing of crows approaching in the distance. I don't know what they were on about, but they were emphatic about it. About 10:30 am, we were proceeding with our many tasks when suddenly there was a BOOM and all the lights went out. I'm assuming a transformer blew up, but really I have no idea. There was no wind, rain, or snow in progress. Well, that was seriously annoying, because most of the things I wanted to do involved having power. Nothing makes you feel powerless like having no power. Heh heh. It was a really dark day, so there wasn't even any sunshine to replace the electric light. We were still able to take showers. The Sparrowhawk practiced the piano, and I moved some more books and things. Then we went to the bookstore to get some lunch. They SAID they'd fix it by 2:30, but I still didn't want to open the refrigerator--not after last time, when the outage went on a lot longer than anticipated. Now, I know I said yesterday that we had not gone out for dinner because of COVID exposure. So I don't know why we went to the bookstore cafe--I guess it always seems pretty safe because they ask people to wear masks, and almost everyone does, and the staff all do, and there's a lot of social distancing even in the cafe area. So we got sandwiches and coffee, and then came home, because the hard chairs are not comfortable for the Sparrowhawk, and they've removed all the comfy ones they used to have.
The power did come back pretty much on schedule. Nothing makes you feel so cozy and luxurious as a power outage, once it's defeated. Ah! Basking in having the furnace back on, and the lights, and the music, and a hot cup of tea. We're supposed to get the skirts of the giant windstorm currently sweeping over the Midwest tonight, so I hope it doesn't go off again. My friend in MN is sleeping in the basement tonight, just in case. We ate some leftovers, and then the Sparrowhawk went off to the gym (after his wedding absence, Coach says the heavy bag missed him!) I felt very tired for some reason, but I motivated myself to do my PT exercises and rearrange a bookshelf that had collapsed, and carry down another box of discards. I currently have two boxes awaiting disposal, containing a total of 58 books. Probably that many more have already left the premises. I have so many left . . . so many books about how to have a lovely garden . . . how to do calligraphy and other kinds of art . . . how to make your own bow and arrow . . . how to sew leather moccasins . . . how to have a superlative writing career, AND market your own books! HA. Fat freaking chance. I should have given those away! Not to mention all the different languages for which I have dictionaries. And then there are the books about history, art, history of art . . . and so much more. "How I love them/How I need them/I'll have a long white beard/Before I read them." I even have a book about meteorology for the field infantryman. I also have books about how to form useful habits. Like reading all my books. But I haven't read those yet.
Anyway . . . I am now very thoroughly NOT READY for my guests. All those things I planned to whisk through today have not happened. But I have to go to bed, because I have PT at 8 freaking 30 tomorrow morning. Aaaack.
