MoonEyed of Sleet
Feb. 5th, 2022 09:02 pmI'm feeling grumpy and greatly disinclined to say anything, probably due to lack of sleep. And that's mostly because my stomach is still bothering me at night. Paradoxical as it seems, I spent a lot of my spare time getting things cooked. Yesterday, I grilled one of the two bunches of asparagus on the stove top, in a cast iron plus enamel pan. It didn't get those nice char marks on it, but it cooked up pretty well. When it got really hot, I sizzled some butter on it, and then squeezed half a lemon over it. It was nice--tender-crisp and piquant with lemon. The Sparrowhawk has also taken to drinking hot water with lemon slices in it. I'm gonna buy another bag of lemons next time I go to the store.
Today I made bread. I decided to make my mother's old recipe, just for a change. It's mostly white, with only a handful of oatmeal. I'm really used to whole grain bread now, and prefer it for every day, but this makes great toast and toasted cheese. It's nostalgic and nice for a change. The Sparrowhawk got Brussels sprouts and oyster and cremini mushrooms the last time he went to the farmers market. They were sitting in the back room, needed to be cooked. So I blanched, marinated, and roasted the sprouts with olive oil and herbs, and sauteed the mushrooms with butter and dill, and roasted a couple of potatoes while the oven was on. That way, it was all ready to be reheated with some cold chicken I had in the refrigerator when we got home from church.
My brother called while I was in the midst of struggling some more with my Dejah Thoris plot. It was a short call because he had another call lined up with his fishing friend. All I really want to do now is go back to bed, but I'm going to watch a little ice skating first. Johnny Weir is so obnoxious and his outfits are so outrageous that he cheers me up.
