What a cascade of days filled with all kinds of activity and emotion! Including a certain amount of terror on the drive home, Christmas Day, when we were doing 30 mph on I-94 in white-out conditions. Brrr. The good part of that was that the weather was SO bad that most people actually slowed down--almost unheard of!

The kids went home yesterday. Tron and the Lumberjack drove away after breakfast. The Philosopher came to church with us to hear the Sparrowhawk lead the service (our minister is on sabbatical) with a talk on "It's Never Too Late to Begin Again." Those last couple of days in December were my real Christmas. I was at home with people that I love. We exchanged our presents, watched movies, had good meals together, talked, and sometimes just sat in front of the fire together with our laptops. It was the best gift. The Duchess's house was magically beautiful when decorated for Christmas, and our dinner there was really nice, too, but having two 90+ year old grandmothers caused some anxiety for those responsible for transporting and tending them. My favorite part of Hotel Christmas was hanging out in the breakfast room with the Nipper, the Redhead, and Raptor, and occasionally Mr. and Ms. Science as well. On Christmas morning, there was a knock at the door of our room. I opened it to see Raptor standing there in his pjs (their room was right across the hall), waving a new box of Legos. He greeted me with the words every grandmother longs to hear on Christmas Day: "Grandmom! SARLACC PIT!!"

We were invited to visit friends for New Year's Eve, but they came down with horrible colds, so we couldn't go. We spent the evening on our own, but had a very nice quiet time. And at midnight, all the kids, restored to their homes, texted us and each other with good wishes. I sang "Auld Lang Syne" and made the Sparrowhawk dance with me. While doing research for his talk, the Sparrowhawk learned that there's a holiday custom somewhere of throwing money into your house from outside at the beginning of the New Year, to bring in prosperity and happiness. Supposedly, if you wear red underwear while doing it, this works better . . . I leave the rest to the reader's fevered imagination. The money is lying around in the hall. It's supposed to stay there for 48 hours, and then you give it away. Some homeless person has a bonus coming, but we won't be discussing the underwear part of it.

A happy, healthy, and prosperous 2018 to all of you!

I'm glad your holiday had good times.

I'm jealous of the members of your elegantly pseudonymous circle.

I'm thinking of the red money envelopes for Chinese New Year. Santa pop-up doll that folds down to 2 x 3 inches?
