Last night, we found ourselves procrastinating on going to bed by watching some Olympic curling. It is oddly hypnotic. We didn't understand the vocabulary, though. The Sparrowhawk had the bright idea that we should call up the Lumberjack, who is from Alberta and knows all about curling. "Hey there, we need some curling things explained to us! You're still up, right?" The Lumberjack: "Tron! It's your Mom and Dad again! Make them stop!" No, we didn't actually call. The dialog is theoretical, eh?

When the sun comes out, or even when it lightens very slightly behind the clouds, I can sense that spring is coming. The angle of the light, its quality, are subtly different every day. But when the clouds are too thick, every day seems locked in a dreary frozen stasis. Tomorrow it's supposed to SHOOT up to 49 degrees. And then rain. And then freeze again. So I have no idea what that's going to end up like. Today, the ice sheets are intact under the snow. On Sunday, I went out for a walk. I wanted more exercise today. I feel I need to give myself a tune-up before spring gets here. However, on Sunday, I nearly fell down a couple of times, and didn't really want to try that again. So I got on the elliptical machine in the basement. This giant iron monster came with us from Pennsylvania, and it just barely fit down the basement stairs. We'd never be able to get it back up again. Fortunately, when Tron and the Lumberjack were living in the finished basement room, they liked having it in their space. The Lumberjack used it frequently, hunched over slightly so he didn't bonk his lofty frame on the ceiling. The Sparrowhawk and I are always saying we should make use of it now that the kids are gone, but it's been haphazard at best. Here's my problem with habits: repeated failure has left me with zero confidence that, if I do a thing, I will ever do it again. Which leaves me wondering why I should do it even once. But tiny tendrils of hope are ever stirring, like roots beneath the frozen ground. Maybe I'll get a bullet journal and some gold stars.

After half an hour on the machine, I made a quick run to the grocery store. We were running out of vegetables. These days, I cook them as soon as I get them, because I don't have confidence that they will not go bad quickly. I didn't get any broccoli or green beans, because those things are 2.99 a pound now! Whenever I see anything on sale, I get some. For dinner, the Sparrowhawk thawed and baked a mini-ham from our farm ladies. I put some sweet potatoes in the oven with it and made sauteed asparagus and mushrooms with a little balsamic glaze, and cabbage and carrots with caraway and celery seed. Also some arugula and mixed greens salad. I like a dinner with plenty of sides.
