After sleeping strangely (up every two hours, followed by having to overcome general discomfort before I could go back to sleep) but for a long time, we got up early so the Sparrowhawk could drive me to the doctor for my post-op checkup. They freed me from the eyepatch. Merciful heavens! Having things taped to my face really drives me nuts, so that was a good thing. Apparently everything is as it should be, so far. I was amazed to realize that I could read the notices posted on the opposite wall. It was a sunny day, and the bright sun was kinda stabby to my reconditioned eye, but I was still glad to see it. I asked the doctor when I could drive, and to my astonishment, he said, "Oh, whenever you feel comfortable. Later today, if you have enough confidence in your depth perception." Ye gods. While I have confidence in my own judgment, I'm not so sure they should be telling that to ALL the septuagenarians I see!

What follows is mostly carrying on about my new eye. I thought that maybe I could still use my glasses for the unfixed eye, by removing the right lens. The technician at the eye clinic thought that might work, too. It doesn't, though. It's too disorienting--more so than just having my left eye be fuzzy while the right one is clear. So I'm still having some interference between eyes. I'm waiting to see what it will be like when they match. Then I can correct any remaining problems with either reading glasses or a prescription, depending on how much adjustment is needed. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to see everything in the distance and middle distance, and only need some help with close-up vision.

Madame wanted to know how I was doing, so I gave her a call and asked if she still wanted to get together today. She did--I think partly out of curiosity! I decided I would give driving a try, and turn around and go home if I had any trouble. It's a familiar trip via surface streets with a low speed limit, and it worked just fine. I felt as if I should be arrested! I have NEVER in my life driven a car without my glasses! It's hard to explain to people who haven't worn glasses since they were seven years old just how exciting it is to look across the road and see the words "DISCOUNT TIRE" on a building and be able to read them! I'm tired now from struggling to focus with both eyes all day, but overall, I'm very happy with my results.

huzzah!

it was at least a couple years before i could pick up my car keys and *not* go "do i have my glasses? where are my glasses?" at least a year before i stopped groping for them when we were going to watch something on tv.

it's brilliant, isn't it?
