SnowCrest of Celeste
Jan. 2nd, 2018 08:51 pmAfter a chat with Deb yesterday that involved fitness and stuff—because she is kind of a pro at self-care in that area—I went out for a walk today in spite of the fact that it was 16 degrees with a bitter wind chill sucking all the heat out of my body. Thanks to an article Deb sent me, I have a quantitative description for what they apparently mean by “strenuous exercise,” as in, “strenuous exercise delays Parkinson’s progression” or “strenuous exercise delays aging.” This article in the New York Times describes a study where “strenuous” was defined as half an hour a day at a heart rate of 80-85% of your recommended maximum. This is a problem for me because at my age, that’s somewhere around 120-130 beats per minute. And this is just pathetic from my point of view. Back when I was younger and more fit and doing tae kwon do, I would routinely push my heart rate up to 180 beats per minute and stay there. Because that’s what it took to make me feel it was “strenuous.” I checked, and I can get my heart rate up to 130 by jogging round and round my house, and I’m not even breathing hard. But I wasn’t going to push it outside in the frozen wastes, especially because the cold air triggers my asthma. I just took a regular brisk walk. Not sure what my heart rate was. I’ll keep doing it for awhile before pushing harder. Sigh. I am very deconditioned, and I hate it.
Today, I Skyped with two writer friends, Moonmoth and the Nonesuch. Among other things we talked about motivation and demotivation. A couple of years ago, Moonmoth provided all three of us with copies of Hillary Rettig’s “The Seven Secrets of the Prolific: The Definitive Guide to Overcoming Procrastination, Perfectionism, and Writer’s Block.” I always meant to read it attentively, but didn’t. (Possibly because I’m a procrastinator??) We decided we’d all read Chapter One this week, and Skype again to discuss it. Perhaps this will motivate us—to read the book, at least.
