Okay okay, back to the ol' blog. If I wait until there's something really interesting to say, it'll be awhile. Today Dr. Nurse did not come over with Bird Baby. She texted me that her mom was there helping, so no visit this week. In what I imagine as a normal family, I would have said, "Great! Why don't you both come over?" But this is not that family. If the Duchess did not tell me she was in town, it was because she didn't WANT to see me, and offering an opportunity to do so would only have made trouble of some kind, which was not my objective. When Dr. Music came for the Sparrowhawk's piano lesson, he offered the excuse that the Duchess said she had a lot of things she wanted to finish up at their house, and was going home today, so she could not visit with me. Ah well. I actually had plenty of things to do my own self, and thought "Great--some unscheduled time! I will get all the things done today!" I didn't, though. I spent some time looking at pictures, went out in the garden and picked a handful of purple pod beans, two cherry tomatoes, and a cucumber, and finally put away the Sparrowhawk's laundry. I wrote almost two more pages of my WIP.

The Sparrowhawk drove over to the eastern side of the state on Sunday, to deliver the first batch of the books that he helped his brother Fritz publish. The Sparrowhawk has worked for hours and hours on this project, over a period of months. It really was a labor of love, but it's also quite a nice book--well-produced, and even well-written! He said that Fritz appeared to tear up a little when holding the book in his hands. I know just how he feels. There's nothing like seeing your work in a shiny package, ready to go out into the world. When the Sparrowhawk came home, he brought with him a gift from Mrs. Fritz: several zucchini and summer squash, green beans, and a couple of green peppers. I was thrilled. The Fritzes have a REAL garden, in a corner of a farmer's field where the soil is good and there's an abundance of sunlight. Not like my little corner of clay in the too-shady back yard! On Sunday, I sliced a squash and a pepper thin, with an onion and a tomato, sauteed them a little, sprinkled them with cheese and herbs, and put them in the oven until the cheese was suitably melted. This is a dish I used to make a lot, with variants, when we were young and poor. It's still delicious, to my taste. Tonight I steamed my beans and their beans together. Fresh, home grown green beans are just one of my favorite things. My cucumber also had terrific flavor and crunch. So I'm happy.

Tonight I grated up just half of the biggest zucchini--this is a squash of murder weapon size--and made zucchini bread from a recipe that assured me it was the ULTIMATE in zucchini bread. Well, I don't know about that, but it was pretty good. Lots of cinnamon, nice texture, crusty edges. It's not quite as good as banana bread, but it is good. The recipe also assures me that it will be even better the next day. So that's something to look forward to.
