Limited success today. We got up too early and rushed around cleaning the bathrooms before we had to go do other things, because the plumber was coming to do a wellness check on our plumbing--a new service our HVAC guys have added. The Sparrowhawk dropped me off at the bookstore to have lunch with Madame, so that he could drive over to the appliance store and look at the refrigerator they thought might suit our requirements. He walked in: "Hello, I'm here to see Ben." "Oh . . . uh, Ben works at our store in Next Town Over." So he had to drive all the way over there. He did look at refrigerators. They had one that was white and the right size, but had no ice maker. I said I could do without an ice maker, but I think he really wanted one, and they said we could have one if we could wait two weeks. Arghhhh . . . well, an ice maker is a desirable luxury. I guess I'll survive. Anyway, it's a relief to at least know that the refrigerator is available and WILL arrive at some point!

I'm worried about Madame. She was reminiscing about various things, and teared up a few times. It's hard to be old. When they start crying about things in the distant past . . . well, there are just a few signs going on that sometimes mean things are not going well. I hope I'm wrong. This is a big week for her, because she is going to consult the surgeon about a cochlear implant for the ear where she no longer has any effective hearing. She has so much hope for being able to hear again. I wish with all my heart that this will come true for her. Just to be able to socialize with other people again would mean the world to her. "People aren't meant to live alone," she told me today. She is right. I feel very lucky right now, because I get to spend time with the whole range of people--from tiny baby to old lady.

I came home and tried to get some work done. I finally cracked 40,000 words, which is halfway. "Well begun is half done," as they say, or as I would say, "Half done is well begun!" I had a brief chat with the Nonesuch, who was also having a day when things break down. The plumber told us the kitchen sink faucet and the garbage disposal need to be replaced. But nothing else leaks, so that's a relief to know! The Sparrowhawk skipped the gym tonight, because he felt dubious about getting on the highway with a bad water pump and a leaky tire. He worked out in the basement instead, and I went for a walk. I picked a BIG pile of green beans off my vines, and found ONE nice tomato before the squirrels got it. They have eaten a promising eggplant. Eggplant! I ask you!! I had no idea they were so omnivorous.
