FrostAir of Leave
Oct. 6th, 2022 09:09 pmYesterday was a day of such nostalgic perfection that it hung on the chain of days like an antique amber pendant. It was warm and sunny in that fragile way that lets you know it's not forever. I managed to get out for a walk. I had lunch with Madame. When I got home, I was sitting out in the back yard when Mr. Science called from the road. He was on his way from the UP to Lake St. Clair to go fishing with friends. Hence no work was done. I told him how I was watching four or five different kinds of bees crowding the Michaelmas daisies. They're almost the last flowers that will bloom before frost, so the bees are in a hurry to glean the last sweetness. It was the kind of day when I amble around fiddling with unsatisfactory Rilke translations in my head and feeling like Bilbo that it is time to go on a journey.
I was hoping for a couple more such day (as Rilke says, "noch zwei südlichere Tage"), or at least one, but this morning, the wind was up and clouds covered the sky. It was cooling off and a scattering of rain arrived in the afternoon. I put the Sparrowhawk's laundry away and went to the grocery store. Then I picked all the green beans that were left on the vines, in anticipation of frost. There was a huge heap of them! The problem is, I left them a little too long, and they are impressively big, but a little tough. I think it's okay, though. I believe you can boil shelly beans with bacon until they get tender. So I've heard. We'll see if that works. I have two almost-ripe tomatoes on the counter. There are a dozen beautiful chalcedony-green ones still on the stem. If they had a couple more weeks, they'd be great, but I think they will have to be eaten green. Some progress was made on the WIP. They don't have seasons on Barsoom, or tomatoes, which I think is quite a loss.
