At some point every year comes the day of "laurie lantar lassi surinen." I think it has arrived, as the golden leaves are falling thickly with the wind. So here you go.

Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen,
yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!
Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier
mi oromardi lisse-miruvóreva
Andúnë pella, Vardo tellumar
nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni
ómaryo airetári-lírinen.

Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva?

An sí Tintallë Varda Oiolossëo
ve fanyar máryat Elentári ortanë,
ar ilyë tier undulávë lumbulë;
ar sindanóriello caita mornië
i falmalinnar imbë met, ar hísië
untúpa Calaciryo míri oialë.
Sí vanwa ná, Rómello vanwa, Valimar!

Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar.
Nai elyë hiruva. Namárië!

Si man i yulma nin equantuva, indeed. Sigh. Not until next year.

In other news, our car was making funny noises again. It's what's called "dieseling," except that's usually after you shut the ignition off, and ours also does it when we turn it on! But not all the time. Just occasionally. We have an appointment to take it in on Friday, but I gloomily expect that they won't be able to replicate the problem when they try it. Maybe it's nothing. But with cars, that is hardly ever the way to bet. We didn't have Bird Baby this morning. We're having her tomorrow afternoon instead. I hope she's agreeable to this. There's no predicting. Since she wasn't here today, I was able to go to the grocery store. There is never anything resembling a bargain these days. There was a price reduction on take-and-bake pizza, so I got some of that, and we had it for dinner along with a big salad. Yesterday, I cooked a pork roast that I got half price from the bargain box, along with white potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, and another hunk of the Great Cabbage. I flavored it with pepper, paprika, and fennel seed, and moistened it with cider. The fennel predominated. I liked it.

I never talked about our weekend trip. We met Tron and the Lumberjack for breakfast at Nick's Pancake House. I had cherry-walnut pancakes. They were good. Then we dropped the Lumberjack off at their apartment, because, as usual, he needed to work and couldn't hang out with us for the whole time. It was great to see their apartment mostly unpacked and looking cozy and livable. Tron was prevailed upon to drive us out to a favorite park of my childhood. She has been there too, but only remembered it vaguely, because we moved to Kansas when she was only six. The day was glorious, and the trees were spectacular in their hurtless fire. I waded in the river. It was icy cold already, but very clear, with little fish in it. I drank in all the beauty. My woods and waters are meat and drink to me. Then we went and got the Lumberjack and went out for actual meat and drink--barbecue, beer and bourbon. The latter two not for me, because I had designated myself as the driver. Tron and the Lumberjack went home, and we went over to see Deb and the Prussian and spend the night. They sent us home with a care package that included some good gluten free oatmeal muffins, some Bosnian coffee--such an interesting flavor, but I can't put my finger on what it reminds me of--and some paw paws so I can plant the seeds and try to start my own patch. On the way home, the leaves swirled across the road like a golden blizzard. Altogether a very satisfactory excursion.

Possibly the flavor you detected was cardamom, in the Bosnian coffee?

Interesting! I do not know what tobacco tastes like, but I am guessing it doesn't taste like cardamom.
