Today we threw caution to the winds and went up to the big lake. It's the last weekend of the year that our home-away-from-home motel is open. We thought we wouldn't be able to go, because at the end of our trip last weekend, the car made odd noises several times when being turned on or off. The garage couldn't look at it until today, thus ruining our weekend. Deapair. Then the Sparrowhawk defied fate by saying we'd just RENT a car and drive up, so there. I felt dubious about this. But, in the end, the car straightened up and flew right, starting and stopping like a charm for the rest of the week. There's no point in taking it in if they're not going to be able to replicate the problem, so once again we defied fate and just drove it anyway. No problems so far. Maybe it was just a batch of bad gas, which wouldn't surprise me at all under the present circumstances.

Most of the maple trees have lost their leaves, but the mingling of golden aspens, golden brown beeches, and all the hues of russet and orange-brown of the oak trees is still pretty spectacular. All blazing out against a perfect blue sky. We went straight to the beach just to check it out. We sat on a driftwood log and ate cheese sandwiches and pickles. The lake was very calm, with the small waves swooshing cheerily in and out. I took off my shoes and went in wading. The water was perfectly clear and ice cold. It hurt my feet a little bit, but I have a need to be in it and of it even if I can't get my whole body in. That MIGHT be overdoing it! Then we walked down along the river to where there's an entrance to the Ridge Trail, and hiked along the ridge awhile, and then crossed over on the Coast Guard trail, and so back to the car via the logging trail. Since covid, I've taken to packing various foodstuffs. It's probably overkill, but it's nice to know we have soup and sandwiches available if we miss our window for dinner, or if we don't want to go out. This time, we made it to the ice cream restaurant as the sky was fading into pink and gold. I had fish and chips and hot coffee. And ice cream, of course--raspberry with chocolate chunks for the Sparrowhawk, and cherry chocolate for me. It's a great luxury to spend the day in the woods and the night in a warm bed! I"d really rather be sleeping on the ground in a tent, all other things being equal, but that ship may have sailed for these old bones. Not today, anyway. Today we have comfy pillows.

Ah, what a lovely day it was! I'm so happy for you, my friend. Take joy wherever you find it. It reminds me of a line from one of the Psalms: "This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." I'm an atheist, but I think that sentiment is a good one.
