RedMoon of Leave
Nov. 8th, 2022 09:32 pmIt's been a pleasure to have the wherewithal to be busy for the last couple of days. Yesterday I was so pleased that I had NO APPOINTMENTS. I didn't have to go anywhere or talk to anyone. I haven't had a chance to have cooking frenzy for awhile, either. I changed the sheets and towels and washed the old ones, and put away laundry. Then I made apple crisp and leek and potato soup, and talked to Queenie. I have now worked my way to the end of my outline and topped out at 52,000 words, at least for the first draft. Now I will go back and read the whole thing from the beginning to see what is wrong and needs to be fixed, and if there are any bits where I could extend a bit to get some more words in. My editor might not mind that it's short, but I want to make sure it's not too short. By nightfall, however, I was too tired and had a headache again. Possible overdoing.
Last night I slept quite badly. Dream fragment: I've been taken to the river, but it's full of old junker cars and whatnot. "It's a RIVER," I say indignantly to my hosts. "You can't just keep throwing stuff into it!" Dream fragment 2: I'm in Switzerland, and it's very beautiful, but there some enormous, but I mean ENORMOUS snakes roaming around the garden. "What the hell!" I say indignantly to my hosts. "There are no snakes in Switzerland!" "Oh, yes, there are," they say in an imperturbable Swiss fashion. "These are the celebrated Giant Swiss Vipers." The snake gives me the side eye and begins slithering toward me. "Oh no you don't," I shout. "Don't you come over here to me! I DON'T WANT YOU HERE." Much indignation in the dream world. I kept waking up until finally I woke up at 5-ish, climbed out of bed, went downstairs and opened the front door to gaze upon the dark spooky sky. Blood moon eclipse? Not a trace. This is Michigan! It was entirely swallowed up by clouds. For just a moment, I spied what might have been just the curve of the moon's edge, peeping through the cloudbank like a red wink. Then it was gone again. I never really went back to sleep after that.
This morning, I had to get up and motivate anyway. Dr. Nurse had asked that we come to look after Bird Baby at their house instead of her coming to ours. She's still trying to "regulate" Bird Baby's sleep, and thinks it might help keep her schedule regular if she's at her own house for napping etc. We didn't mind. I had to leave the baby with the Sparrowhawk for awhile to go get my teeth cleaned and checked. When I got back, they were both laughing. Bird Baby was even happier to have both of us there to entertain her. I was trying to sing "Pony Boy" to her, but couldn't remember all the lyrics, so I was making them up. Of course it has to be "Pony Girl" for her. "Ride into the valley deep, there a picnic we will eat. Lots of beans and barbeque--I will toot and so will you!" She thought it was hilarious. We got home, had a quick bite to eat, and then walked over to the polling place to vote. They told us we were in luck, because it had been crowded all day until just then. I was voter 404. Came home, tried to work on the book, got ensnared in technical matters of time and space. Then I cooked a big hot pot of Polish sausage, carrots, potatoes, onions, peppers, and sauerkraut, with black pepper, fennel seeds, caraway seeds, and dill. And a side of green beans. Now I'm tired again, and there's no point in staying up to see the returns, because they probably won't be done today anyway. Hopefully tonight will be a non-viperish night.
