(Grand)Mother's Day
May. 14th, 2017 09:39 pmTired but satisfied. We're home after visiting my mother and having dinner with her. It was a beautiful day, so the drive wasn't bad at all. I drove both ways so the Sparrowhawk could take it easy and get started with some work he has to do to prepare for a conference in Dallas tomorrow. We took the clock, wrapped up in pretty tissue paper, and a big bag of supplies--hearing aid batteries, Benefiber, bandaids, and some liquid bandage stuff that she wanted because it sticks better than a bandaid. It's an odd aspect of her autoimmune condition that she easily gets little cuts and cracks on her fingers, and they don't heal up very fast. She was all dressed up in a pink and gray outfit, and I had dressed up too. I'm a little bit haunted by the thought that all of these things might be my last chance. Mother will probably fool me by living to be 102, like one of her friends that we ran into today. But if so, I guess I'll have to keep on making special days special for as long as it takes! I'm trying to take more pictures, so I wanted to look presentable.
After dinner, Deb and the Prussian stopped by and visited. Deb brought a bunch of the most beautiful deep purple lilacs from her back yard. They perfumed the whole room. She had also put some more old pictures in album pages for my mother, to be added to the big photo album that Deb already put together for her. The Duchess had given Mother a new multiple-picture frame so she can make a new and better photo collection to hang on the wall. My daughter Tron sent her some of her favorite soap and a couple of pairs of stockings for when the weather gets warmer. This was very thoughtful, because it's not easy to get panty hose when you don't do your own shopping. Mother was quite pleased with the clock, because it was big and the numbers were bright and easy to see.
After dinner, we went for a walk to see the new cutting garden, and then walked around the grounds to the back of the building, and so back in to the small coffee shop in the public area of the dementia unit. We used to go there with my father. Mother wanted us to get an ice cream cone. It was fun, and a nice place to chat a little more. We were all surprised to see that it was four o'clock already. We all had places to be and had to go home, and Mother was needing a little rest by then. I think she enjoyed herself, and the presence of Deb and the Prussian added something special to the day. Seeing them was certainly an extra pleasure for me!
I had lovely phone calls from all of the children. They sent me a group gift of a bouquet of asters and carnations, and Tron sent me the most marvelous present. It's a book called The Garden Awakening: Designs to Nurture Our Land and Ourselves, by Mary Reynolds. I know I'm going to love reading it and find much refreshment and inspiration in it. It's also beautifully designed and illustrated, so it's a pleasure just to look at it.
