I thought the Philosopher was going to stop in and spend the night on his way home from visiting a sick friend, so I got all excited and baked bread and a cake (his birthday is next week). Slight change of plan, however. The friend got moved back into ICU, so the Philosopher will probably come tomorrow instead. Oh well. It will keep. I'm still coughing my head off, so I'm glad I decided not to go play the violin at church tomorrow, for that reason as well as others. I don't think I could have tolerated the sermon, for one thing. The minister is a substitute, since our regular minister is on sabbatical for a couple more weeks. The precis of her sermon was so badly written it made my eyeballs hurt, and while claiming to have studied with the noted Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, she misspelled his name. It could have been a typo, or the dread autocorrect, but good grief, people, PROOFREAD. The Sparrowhawk was preparing the inserts for the order of service, as he does every month, and I had to interpret a couple of sentences for him, insert missing words, and create subject-verb agreement where there was none. I can only hope I did it right, because there was no chance to check with the author. So unprofessional. I'm still far too grouchy to put up with this in a public setting.

My own synopsis is down to 1000 words, so now it's only twice as long as it should be, instead of three times. I've taken out all references to any subplots, even though it makes a lot less sense without them, and any thematic references--ditto. I commented to a friend that I believe the synopsis was created by the devil to make writers hate their own work and see it as completely pointless. She retorted dryly, "I thought this was called 'writing.'" But I don't think the WHOLE process is torture--just the parts done at the behest of others.

The Duchess visited Mother today and could not fix her cell phone because they'd tried so many wrong passwords that it locked itself up. They called me on her land line and it appeared to work. Tonight I called her three times before she picked up. She said she'd been trying to call me, but got a message from "a department of something or other" that wanted her to call back on Monday because they weren't open now. I suggested that MIGHT have been a wrong number . . . . Her friend from down the hall came to visit, fell off her couch and lacerated his arm, and she was quite indignant that the staff insisted on treating it themselves after she had bandaged it "scientifically" with dressings left over from when she had her leg ulcer.

I am not a person who has the knack for synopsis.
