Today is our daughter in law the Lovely Friend's birthday! We sent her some flowers, which have arrived safely. I hope it was a nice day in Chicago. Here it was rather cloudy and damp. It's raining softly as I speak. Before that happened, we raked up all the leaves in the front yard--again. It was another 10 or 11 bags. There are probably enough leaves on the tree to require us to do it one more time. Last time I raked the leaves, it was exhilarating. This time I got tired and felt discouraged, because although I completed one task, there's a lot more waiting to be done. Also because my body is achy now. It's got to be good for me though--right?? If I just rake enough leaves I'll be sprightly again!

I sometimes feel like apologizing for talking mostly about weather and food, but my other thoughts don't warrant sharing at this time of the world. Last night, we ate leftovers--some of the few remaining odds and ends from the freezer, to wit, some chicken curry I didn't realize was in there, and some sliced lamb, ditto. Both of them turned out to be pretty good. Tonight, we had pasties from the farmers market, along with green beans, ditto. Yesterday I steamed the golden beets from the market, and we ate some of them with the leftovers. They are just like candy--very delicious. Today, with the remainder, I tried to reconstruct a beet salad I got at the Kurdish coffee shop. That one was made with red beets, with onion, pickle, dill, and Greek yogurt. I made it the same, except for the type of beets. The menu at the coffee shop said it also had "spices." I don't know what they were, so they weren't in it, but it was pretty tasty.

Mmm, beets. I need to learn to cook with beets; I've never tried it.
